  • SWANA develops official letter on issue of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change

There are a number of new bills that have been introduced in the U.S. Congress to control greenhouse (GHG) gas emissions that contribute to climate change. In March, Congressman John Dingell, Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee issued a wide-range call for input on the design and characteristics of such a GHG control program. This was an excellent opportunity for SWANA to explain how modern solid waste management systems emphasizing energy recovery and recycling can make a significant contribution to the reduction of GHG emissions. Working with several of the SWANA Technical Divisions SWANA has responded with a letter to Chairman Dingell which was delivered on March 19th.

The 2006 recipient in the recent high school graduate category is Elsbeth Centola, daughter of Chad Centola of Deschutes County. The winner of the scholarship for a returning student is Brian Daniel Bickford, son of Jeff Bickford of Marion County. Elsbeth and Brian’s chosen universities will receive $1,000 each toward the students’ tuition, and the recipients will receive letters of congratulations from the SWANA Oregon Beaver Chapter.
