SWANA Oregon Chapter Road-E-O 2011

Congratulations to the
2011 Road-E-O Winners!
It was an eventful day at the
Lane County fairgrounds this past Saturday!
Waste Industry drivers from all over the state
competed for the chance to be crowned best in
the Northwest. Contestants took to their trusty
steeds, wrangled them around the obstacle
courses set out before them and came out
victorious!
The
day began with breakfast, registration and some
perusing of the vendor booths and displays. Soon
though, the competition was in full swing. The
transfer truck took off first on course 3 while
the mechanics worked away at their long test
indoors. Soon the roar of the side loader and
roll off trucks could be heard along with the
cat calls of the spectators. Within minutes, the
trucks were off and running and the cones were
flying! The scene in the mechanics area was much
more sedate as the contestants methodically and
meticulously inspected their trucks, looking for
the planted bugs. By lunch time, the 8 roll off
drivers, 9 side load drivers and 5 transfer
truck drivers were done with their courses and
ready for some grub.
After lunch all eyes were on the
front load drivers. With belly’s full of
delicious barbeque, it was time for the
contestants to roll themselves back to the
courses to finish up the day.

With competition over,
anticipation grew as pre-trip inspections
finished and scorekeepers frantically tallied
scores. Raffle prizes graciously donated by
sponsors were doled out, brownies were eaten,
and finally, it was time to hand out some belt
buckles! Winners in each of the five categories

With dreams of the national
Road-E-O in Georgia fresh in their minds, the
contestants and their families called it a day.
Friends and rivals shook hands and parted ways
still speaking of promises to cream each other
at next year’s competition.

What is a Road-E-O?
The Road-e-o is a great
opportunity for the “front-line” employees in
the solid waste management field - truck
drivers, heavy equipment operators and mechanics
- to obtain education through formal training
and networking. The Road-e-o also gives these
front-line employees a chance to display their
on-the-job skills in a competitive arena.

opportunity for industry drivers from both the
private and public waste sectors to compete for
top honors in demonstrating their driving
knowledge and skills. The competition includes a
behind-the-wheel test that requires each driver
to maneuver industry-standard roll-off, front
end loading, automated sideloading
and transfer vehicles
through a preset course that will challenge the
driver’s skills at starting and stopping the
vehicle, negotiating the road, and backing up
the vehicle while exhibiting general safe
